What the heck is the coach talking about??!!
CRASH THE NET means get your butt in front of the net when we are in their end so that you can deflect the puck or put a rebound in the back of their goal!!
THE SLOT is the area directly in front of the goal. LOW SLOT is plunk right in front of the goalie and HIGH SLOT is the area directly between the two face-off circles. Hint: great place to score goals, either one.
HASH MARKS are the lines at the edges of the circles within the zones.
THE POINT is where the defense stand in the offensive zone. Put it back there to them if they are open for the boomer shot at the net. If you are a winger, that's your spot when we are in our zone.
TWO ON THE PUCK! Usually indicates that we have a power-play and the other team has the puck (bad thing), so two people should be attacking to get it back!
PINCH indicates that the defencemen are pressing into the offensive zone, trying to help the forwards score a goal! Just be careful if we are playing against a good team because it's an easy way to get burnt...that's why you hear the goalie and/or coach yelling "Don't pinch!!" on occasion.
SHIFT means that everyone shifts to the side that the play is on. The idea is to keep moving all the time, supporting the play. In the offensive zone, this might mean over-loading one side of the ice if the puck is in the respective corner. In the defensive zone, the same positional play applies to ensure that you stay with your check. KEEP YOUR FEET MOVING!!
CHALLENGE/PRESSURE is what we do when the other team has the puck. You guard them so that they cannot skate with it and you shut down their passing lane so that they can't pass it. Hopefully they will cough it up and off we go!!
LANES. Picture the length of the ice as three lanes: each of the forwards fills one, but just because you are one wing or the other or the centre, it doesn't mean that you always have to be in your lane. All of the forwards should be constantly skating and filling each others' lanes, kind of like doing the weave in basketball.
COVER is related to the back-check. The first three players back into the defensive posture are the ones that pick up the oppositions' forwards. This duty usually falls to the defence (of course) and the centre. But if the centre gets caught in the offensive zone and can't get back, she will ask a winger to help her "cover" - to pick up the third man in her place. The centre would then take the point, in the winger's place.
Note: THERE WILL BE A TEST ON THESE TERMS LATER!!
