What makes a winning team?
Shannon Miller (former Team Canada coach and present head-coach of the University of Minnesota-Suluth Women's Hockey Team):
"There are three things, and if a team has all three it will be successful.
1. Commitment to Excellence
2. Chemistry
3. Heart
It's never one without the other two. You can have the greatest team chemistry, but if you're not committed to excellence you won't win. You can have the most talented team in the world, but if you don't have good team chemistry you will not win. It takes all three things to finish the job."
Jillian Ellis (UCLA Women's Soccer coach):
"RESPECT.
If there is mutual respect between players and coaches, that keeps the team honest and makes for a very healthy environment - which in turn promotes other important qualities such as work ethic, integrity and a positive atmosphere for competing and winning."
John Cook (University of Nebraska Women's Volleyball coach:
"TRUST.
Without it there is no team. Of the teams I've coached that have been successful, all have had an unbelievable amount of trust in each other - especially in a sport like volleyball, where you have six people working together in 900 square feet."
Van Chancellor (WNBA Houston Comets coach):
"WILLINGNESS TO SACRIFICE INDIVIDUAL GOALS FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.
In basketball that's important, because you've only got one ball."
Tony Dungy (NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach):
"HARD WORK AND TOGETHERNESS.
They go hand in hand. You need the hard work, because it's such a tough atmosphere in the NFL to win week in and week out. You need the togetherness, because you don't always win, and you gotta hang tough as a team."
